About
Born out of the swamps of North Florida, Asher Dobrin is a young composer, educator, and environmentalist with a thirst for innovation and provocative discussion. Dobrin began studying double bass with Erik Alvar in 2017 where he gained a deep appreciation for local folk music. In 2019, he began studying with Dr. Kevin Casseday at the University of Florida as he explored more technical performing.
Under Jason Stahl and Dr. Dominique Clance’s guidance Dobrin dove into arranging music for a wide variety of styles and genres until graduating high school in 2022. Working in this unique environment pushed Dobrin to understand timbre, texture, and overall musicality in many ways.
After high school, Dobrin was offered a full tuition award to study Double Bass Performance with Dr. Paul Erhard at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Arranging and composing were still dominant fascinations in Dobrin’s life. Following Erhard’s retirement in 2023, Dobrin was accepted into the composition studio to begin studying under Carter Pann, Annika Socolofsky, John Drumheller, and Michael Theodore. Along with studying composition, Dobrin continues to study Double Bass with Professor Susan Cahill.
Studying composition and bass in Boulder has allowed Dobrin to explore advanced contemporary art music as both a composer and performer.
Over the years, music has become Dobrin’s main form of expression of his soulful passion for environmentalism, community, and storytelling. The communal nature of music fascinates and inspires him to dig deeper into himself and the world around him.
Constantly moved by the clear cut pastures appearing in place of forests around his childhood home, Dobrin developed a spiritual attachment to the land he is both a part of and has never met. In his teen years, Dobrin began getting involved with local activism surrounding social justice issues in addition to climate crisis efforts.
Today, Dobrin spends his time strengthening his place and spiritual connections with nature, his community, music, and himself.
